China is a country of unique delicacies and historical wonders. It’s also quite expansive, with each region and city offering unique experiences. Experiencing all China has to offer at once would take forever, so we’re breaking down some of our favorite destinations to visit and what to do there.
Beijing — romanized as Peking a city’s whose history spans three millennia. The city sites are spectacular in modern and historical architecture. The Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, Summer Palace, and the Great Wall are essential destinations.
Explore the magnificent ancient architecture of the Forbidden City the imperial palace during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The largest imperial palace in the world constructed in 1420 by the Ming dynasty consists of 9999 rooms, no kidding, plan 2-3 hours to tour viewing imperial living quarters, priceless artwork and traditional gardens when you have completed your exploration and education of the Forbidden City, located south of the palace visit Tiananmen Square.
The Great Wall of China, one of the 7 World Wonders, is the longest wall in the world consisting of a series of fortifications. Consider hiking or biking the Great Wall, while viewing the Great Wall at night feels like traveling back in time. You can envision the sentries patrolling keeping watch. Simatai two hours outside of Beijing is the only location to tour the wall at night. Be Warned the Simatai Wall is a challenging section to climb, however, the views and water town at the base will create a lifetime memory. Travelers recommend a combination of hike and cable car for the best experience.
Complete the city by touring the most incredible food markets in the world from Ghost Street to Wangfujing and many more you will leave amazed and intrigued by the variety of delicacies.
Xi'an — the capital of Shaanxi Province in central China. Once known as Chang’an meaning Eternal Peace. The city marks the eastern end of the Silk Road. The area is an archeology wonder. Home to the Terracotta Army considered one of the most significant archaeological sites in the world. More than 6,000 life-size terracotta warriors and horses, all with different expressions and poses.
After viewing the Terracotta army, consider a hiking trip to enjoy the fantastic geography and architectural structures of Mount Li, a forested 4,265 ft national park mountain. The park boasts views of historic palaces, temples, and pavilions and is considered one of eight scenic spots known to “shine like a beacon in the evening light.”
Chengdu — the capital of southwestern Sichuan province, romanized as Chengtu with a history dating back to the 4th century B.C. Better known as the “Panda” Capital, home to the famous Chengdu Research Base of the Giant Panda. Visitors view and interact with the endangered giant pandas in their natural habitat.
Chengdu is rapidly becoming a top far west destination known for relaxing teahouses, lively nightlife, and delicious spicy foods. Bike the “Wide and Narrow Alleys” in the Qingyang district a hot spot of restaurants and street vendors featuring Sichuan Cuisine. Take an express train to Mount Qingcheng the birthplace of Taoism. Mythology states that Mount Qingcheng was the site of the Yellow Emperor’s studies. Qingcheng mountain has 36 peaks, beautiful waterfalls, many architectural structures of temples, and at the foot is the old town Tai An
Chengdu city has something for every traveler from wildlife, trail hiking, spicy delicacies, and lively nightlife.
Travelers could spend a lifetime visiting China and experiencing the wonders spanning back to the third century B.C. Beijing, Xi’an, and Chengdu are only 3 of a long list of incredible destinations one can visit in China, but I hope you have gotten a small glimpse into the wonders of traveling to this unique country.
