10 Things to Know Before Traveling to Namibia

Come prepared before traveling to Namibia, a country filled of wildlife, stunning landscapes, rich culture and welcoming locals. To make the most of your trip, we’re sharing a few need-to-know tips before embarking on your unforgettable Namibian Safari.

1) Expect the roads to be BuMpY

Famous sites such as Damaraland, Fish River Canyon and Sossusvlei are only accessible across gravel roads. Don’t let this set you back, rent or grab a ride in a 4x4 to experience all Namibia has to offer.

2) September & October are Prime Months to Visit

If looking to avoid pesky mosquitoes and flooded roads, plan your visit around the dry season. Keep in mind that year round, it can get very hot during the day and very cold at night.

3) Be Prepared to Take Lots of Pictures

Between the abundant wildlife and glowing sunrises and sunsets you’ll want a backup memory card and battery. Take it all in with your eyes but also utilize your camera to share your experience with friends and family back home. Make sure to keep your equipment in a safe place when not using, as the desert sand can be extremely damaging.

4) Namibia uses D/M Electrical Plugs

Don’t miss a shot! You’re going to want to make sure all of your photo taking devices are fully charged. Add a few adapters if necessary to your Namibia packing list. If you forgot one, always ask your lodging facility to see if they might have a spare.

5) Tap Water is Safe to Drink (in most places)

Always important to double check this one with your lodging facility, but throughout Namibia many places offer drinkable tap water. Be sure to stock up for your long drives through the desert!

6) Namibia isn’t so Vegan Friendly

Namibians do love their meat. While not impossible to find a vegetarian/vegan-friendly meal, it is important to inform restaurants of your dietary restrictions beforehand as game meat is a staple in the Namibian diet.

7) Tipping is Expected

The Namibian dollar (NAD), equivalent to the South African Rand, is Nambia’s most accepted currency. It’s always recommended to carry smaller bills to tip guards, waiters, etc. A little goes a long way.

8) German is a Common Language

The German influence of beer and monuments has remained strong since Namibia was colonized by Germany in the 19th century. Expect to hear German, English and a native tongue known as Oshiwambo during your time in Namibia

9) Cell Phone Service Isn’t Consistent

Take a break from the online world; depending on your carrier, service is known for being spotty throughout Namibia. Always bring a physical map with you on your long road trips as a reliable backup.

10) Namibia is Safe

Although every experience is different, many have reported feeling safe during their travels throughout Namibia. As always, it’s important to take the normal safety precautions, but overall Namibia is known as being a very peaceful and welcoming country. For those traveling with children, besides the long driving distances the country has been marked ‘family-friendly’.

One final bonus tip: enjoy! Namibia is an incredible destination that will take your breath away. Its unique landscape, exotic wildlife, and friendly culture will make for a thrilling adventure.
