The Best Time to Visit Peru

While it is perhaps most well-known for containing one of the seven wonders of the world, Machu Picchu, Peru is a country shrouded in rich culture and history of ancient civilizations. Peru contains 84 of the 103 ecosystems in the world and 28 of the 32 climates, making it the most ecologically diverse country in the world. Within its borders, there are three distinct regions: the coastal region, the highlands, and the Amazon, all of which have their own unique climates. And while the country is certainly travel-friendly all year round, the various regions and climates make different times of the year ideal for travel. Read below to figure out the best time to plan your perfect trip to Peru!

The Coast: November to March

While most of Peru’s coastline is generally cold throughout the year, the best beaches lie in the far north of the country, where the water and weather are warmest. November to March are the summer months in coastal Peru and are thus the most popular beach-going months. Summer brings unrelenting sun, warm waters, and big swells, all of which create ideal conditions for surfing and sunbathing!

While the Northern coast stays (mostly) sunny throughout the year (with slightly lower temperatures and increased humidity in the winter), the rest of the coastline suffers from La Garua during the winter months (May to September): a low-hanging, dense gray fog with a gloomy drizzle. So, if you’re hoping to hit the beach, plan your trip for November-March and head the Northern Peru!

The Highlands (Machu Picchu): April-September

Let’s face it, most travelers to Peru hope to visit the famous City of Machu Picchu in Cusco at some point during their trip. The highland areas of Peru can experience heavy showers during the summer months of December-March, and while the trails are still accessible (except the Inca trail, which closes for the month of February), there is a good chance you will experience some chilly weather (and probably get a little wet!) On the positive side, because of the rainy weather, there will be fewer tourists during this time of the year.

May through August is considered peak season in the highlands, especially in Machu Picchu. April and May are often ideal times to travel to Machu Picchu, after the rainy season but before the hoards of tourists descend upon the city.

The Amazon: June to November

As you can imagine, the humidity, temperature, and rainfall are all high throughout the year in the Amazon jungles of Peru. December to May is considered “high water season” in the rainforest, meaning that the rivers are at their fullest during this time of year. Though the high waters make boat travel easy and accessible, it’s important to note that rushing water and soft river banks can be treacherous.

During the low-water season (well, lower) from June to November, trails will be much more accessible. However, make sure your bring your sunscreen, water bottle, and bug spray, because the the high temperatures and humidity are not for the faint of heart!

No matter the time of year you are planning your trip, it is sure to be an unforgettable one! Have you ever traveled to Peru? When did you go? Comment below and let us know!
