9 Things to do in Fiji

It isn’t hard to understand why people of all ages want to travel to Fiji on their next vacation. From the rich culture to the authentic local flavors, Fiji has so much to offer to all of its travelers. Take the computer images of the lush green tropical rain forests, clear waters, and white sand beaches and see them in reality. With so much to do, we have put together a guide on the best way to spend your time in Fiji. Here are the top 9 things to do during your time in Fiji:

1. Go Snorkeling

Take advantage of the crystal clear blue water and go snorkeling. If you haven’t fallen in love with the islands already, odds are you will be head over heels after this activity. The water stays warm all year round and offers great visibility conditions of all of the colorful marine life that call these waters home. You truly can’t go wrong when picking a beach to snorkel at, but if you are looking for somewhere to start, Castaway and Mantaray are often popular favorites. For those looking to check out what the deeper waters have to offer, there are also many great dive sites in the area as well.

2. See the Islands from Above

Once you are done exploring the world down under, hop in a helicopter and explore the vibrant islands from above. For a unique view of the islands, look into flying with HeliTours Fiji, Island Hoppers, or Pacific Island Air. Take in all of the small little islands and try to pick out the one you’re staying on! Those aerial views from the helicopter are oh-so-sensational!

3. Buy some Fresh Fruit

Head to the Suva Municipal Market for some exploring. This experience is one you definitely don’t want to miss. The market was established in the 1950s and is still bustling to this day. Stop by and take advantage of all of the yummy fresh fruits and vegetables being sold at their reasonable rates. The market is open daily from 6am to 6pm but it is known that the best times to visit are between 8am and 2pm. Photographers should definitely bring their cameras to this outing. With so much going on you’ll be sure to capture something!

4. Raft the River

Experience the authentic natural and cultural heritage of Fiji on a rafting adventure. Head into the remote highlands of Viti Levu for a unique experience on the river. Zip down the Upper Navua River as you navigate the challenging rapids while being surrounded by the lush rainforest, tall volcanic rocks, and over 70 waterfalls. During the calmer parts of the river lookout for the wide array of birds and wildlife nearby. This rafting journey is an experience you definitely will not forget.

5. Go on a Dinner Cruise

If traveling to Fiji with the love of your life or with a special someone you should look into taking a romantic dinner cruise ride on the calm, turquoise blue waters of the warm Pacific Ocean. Soak in the views of the picture-perfect colorful Fijian sunset and enjoy the peace as you drift out at sea surrounded by a rich landscape filled with biodiversity. For the perfect sunset views, dinner cruises typically run from 5:30-8:30pm. The average cruise costs around INR 5,500 or around $75 USD. The price is well worth it as the delicious cuisine is cooked using local ingredients.

6. Visit Viseisei Village

Located north of Nadi, the Viseisei village is the oldest settlement in all of Fiji. The village has served as the home to some of Fiji’s past leaders. As you enter the village, you’ll pay the local ladies who run the craft market $3 to take you around. You’ll get a true sense of village life through their guidance as they lead you into the traditional chief’s hut, the church, and many other places. It is important that you dress appropriately out of respect by covering up your knees and shoulders while in community.

7. Explore the Garden of the Sleeping Giant

Located at the foothills of the Nausori Highlands, the Garden of the Sleeping Giant is a magical sight to see. Check out the over 2,000 beautiful orchids and other lush tropical plants that make up the garden. This destination is very convenient to go on your trip since it is located only 20 minutes from Nadi.

8. Relax at a Natural Hot Spring

Make a visit to one of the mud pools/hot springs in Fiji and take advantage of all of the self-cleaning and natural beauty benefits they offer. If visiting the Garden of the Sleeping Giant, check out the Sabeto hot spring as well since they are close in location. It is definitely doable to visit both sites on the same day. Upon arrival start off by covering yourself in the thick, mineral-rich mud and then let it dry under the hot sun for around 10 minutes. Following that, wade into the natural pools and relax in the soothing waters with all different temperatures as you slowly cool and wash off.

9. Get a Banana Leaf Massage

If you are looking to continue your day of relaxation, check out having a banana leaf massage. This treatment includes getting wrapped in a massive banana leaf and then being coated with a mix of natural brown sugar and virgin coconut oil. Following, your massage will begin and is oftentimes accompanied by strategically-placed natural sounds and music that will bring a feeling of positivity and calm in your soul, leaving you refreshed and ready to enjoy the rest of your adventure in Fiji. If this sounds like something of interest to you, check out Rainforest Spa at Koro Sun Resort. These massages typically start around INR 2,400 or $35 USD.
