Brazil’s Underrated Destinations

The massive South American country is home to some of the most famous travel destinations on Earth. Iguazu Falls, Rio de Janeiro, and the Amazon are a few elite locations that attract globetrotters from around the world. While these destinations are certainly incredible bucket-list getaways, Brazil has so much more to offer. Here are some underrated Brazilian destinations:

Florianopolis

Sometimes referred to as the Hawaii of Brazil, Florianopolis is a beachy island in the southern state of Santa Catarina. The island is home to dozens of stunning beaches, beautiful forests, and incredible surfing. Embrace the lovely countryside and rural living found in Brazil to appreciate a different way of life. Take time to celebrate the Portuguese heritage and architecture as the area’s history is extensive. The region has a relaxing beach vibe and chill style that will soothe your soul.

With so many places to visit in Florianopolis, we have a few highlights and suggestions. Be sure to visit Joaquina Dunes. The dunes are made of soft sand and offer gorgeous views of the ocean, forest, and small surrounding neighborhoods. Take a swim at Lagoinha do Leste beach which offers a remote beach with amazing views. Watch the sunset at Santo Antonio de Lisboa as it is a timeless fishing village that remains charming to this day.

Arraial do Cabo

Rio de Janeiro is one of the world’s most popular cities, and for good reason. However, just up the coast lies one of Brazil’s best beach towns. Arraial do Cabo is known for its crystal clear Caribbean-like water, soft white sand, and laid back style. The small tourist town is situated perfectly around the beach with everything you need in close proximity.

Arraial do Cabo has countless picturesque beaches to choose from. Praia do Farol is a secluded piece of paradise with light blue calm water. Try something more exotic and learn to scuba dive. Prainhas do Pontal do Atalaia is the most famous spot in the area with a long stretch of sand and a vegetated beach scene that is out of this world. Be sure to take a boat excursion to access secluded areas that can only be reached by boat.

São Paulo

People often overlook visiting São Paulo due to a lack of knowledge of the area. Make this mistake no more as there is no better way to soak in the Brazilian culture than by spending time in the business capital of Latin America. More than 20 million Brazilians live in the São Paulo metropolis. The never-ending New York like skyline is home to people of all walks of life. Vibrant celebrations can be found all across the city over the weekends. Funk beats blare as Brazilians let loose and enjoy their time off.

São Paulo is known for its nightlife. Hit the bars and restaurants to experience the best food in Brazil. Explore the different sections of town to get a taste of everything. The Centro is home to Avenida Paulista, the most famous street in Brazil. Venture out to Ibirapuera Park and spend the afternoon at the central park of São Paulo. Futebol (Soccer) is the ultimate Brazilian sport. Go to a game at one of the exciting stadiums in São Paulo. Chow down in Japan town in the Liberdade neighborhood. Get a complete overview of the city from Jaragua Peak. Sao Paulo offers so many unique activities for you to experience during your time in Brazil.

Salvador

Experience Africa in Brazil! The heart of Carnaval, Salvador is an exciting coastal city in the state of Bahia. While the culture is very Brazilian, African influences stick around from years past. The old town Salvador neighborhood of Pelourinho is a colorful cobblestone village. Art, drums, and delicious food cover the area. Instagram will love your pics of old town halls, churches, and homes in the area. Understand the slave history in Brazil and get an idea of the early reality in the town.

Hop on a boat tour for a party day in the islands. Islands like Ilha dos Frades and Ilha de Itaparica are heaven on earth. Party boat excursions make the experience fun bouncing from island to island serving up music and drinks for all. The Casa do Rio Vermelho is the old home of famous writers Jorge Amado and Zelia Gatai. See well-preserved collections and artifacts in the home. Last but not least, Flamengo Beach is arguably the best beach in the area. It has everything you need with beach service, showers, natural pools for the kiddies, restaurants, and perfect size waves to play in.

Chapada dos Veadeiros

Brazil has so many hidden gems, that we would need to write several books to talk about them all. Mother Nature throws some serious curveballs and surprises around here. Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park is one of those surprises. Located in the more rural state of Goias, the huge park has so much to see and do. Waterfalls pour hundreds of meters off of the rocks into inviting rock pools and rivers. Keep your eyes open for the jungle wildlife as jaguars, toucans, armadillos, and other exotic species roam the park.

Two towns are access points to the park, São Jorge and Alto Paraiso de Goias. Getting there can be tricky and time-consuming, but the end result is totally worth it. The trails in the park are perfectly built to weave through the highlights of the terrain. There always seems to be another waterfall, stream, pool, or lookout point. Research a little bit before your visit to plan activities that are exciting to you. There is so much to see that you will likely have to pick and choose.
