Fiji - A Pearl on The Pacific Ocean
Are you sick of cars and buses honking at each other, people rushing on the street, and being buried in the endless tasks from work or school? If these are what you feel, Fiji will be an earthly paradise for you to leave all the stress and worries behind as well as refresh your mind and body. Fiji is famous for its friendly people, beautiful natural beauty, and many interesting cultural features. Let me give you a glimpse of what it is like to travel in Fiji.
Fiji is located in the south of the Pacific Ocean. In the middle of many other wonderful tourist places, such as Tonga, New Zealand, and Tahiti. Fiji has year-long warm weather. The average temperature of Fiji is about 77°F. The hottest day will not go much higher than 86°F and the lowest day is still around 64°F. Just as good as the weather, Fijian are friendly and energetic. Also, because of the British colonize history and its government policy, most of the Fijians can speak English, so don’t worry about getting around in Fiji without knowing Fijian.
1. Major Cities
Suva, the capital city of Fiji, is a lavish and lively city. Unlike Washington D.C., Beijing, or some other famous capital cities in the world, Suva is not crowded or full of air pollution. However, it also has the convenience and educational sites those big cites can offer. For example, you can learn about the long tourism, cannibalism, and religious history of Fiji. Also, the beaches by Suva are just as pretty as any other famous beaches in Fiji. Just as famous as Suva, you probably have heard of Nadi before. Nadi is where the international airport located and is often the first stop of all the tourists. Nadi has the largest Hindu temple in the south hemisphere and is famous for body surfing, and water sports. Some other worth visiting islands or cities are Denarau, Wailoaloa, Vanua Levu.
2. Festivals
Under the influences of many different cultures, Indian, Fijian, and Western, it’s not a surprise that Fiji has many kinds of unique festivals. Bula (meaning “hello” or “welcome”) Festival takes place at Nadi from July 11th-18th. For those who want to learn about Fijian culture, Bula is a festival you don’t want to miss. There will be plenty of good food, islander dances, music, and other exciting and inclusive events. Since Fiji is a multicultural country, there will be more than you can expect. Another festival originated from India is the “Fire Walking Festival.” Men are to prove their bravery and faith by walking barefoot on the scorching hot stone. It may seem cruel to a westerner, but it’s an honor for men to pass this ceremony. Some other good festivals you may consider participating are Holi, Hibiscus, or Fiji Day. There are all interesting cultural performances and food.
3. Hiking Places
You might think beaches are the only places to go when it comes to outdoor activities in Fiji. However, Fiji has more than that. If you are a hiker, Fiji will not disappoint you. Mount Tomanivi, the highest mountain (4341 feet) in Fiji, may not seem high compared to the mountains in the states. However, the views are a lot greener and spectacular. You won’t just see mountains after mountains. You can see many refreshing waterfalls like Tavoro waterfall or ocean views. These are what you may not be able to experience in other places. Also, hiking allows you to know local living in person. There are some local villages you can’t arrive through cars or other transportation. Even if you don’t particularly love hiking, you should give it a try. Fiji can give you a whole new hiking experience.
4. Diving
Having the 26th largest exclusive economic zone (Ocean zone), Fiji does not only have good seafood, but it also has abundant diving resorts. There are more than 390 coral species and 1200 fish species. It’s hard to say where is the best diving site in Fiji cause every corner is another world-class coral view. However, “Bligh Waters” is one of the sites you must go to. The area is between the two main islands and the reputation, “soft coral capital of the world,“ just comes from this place. Another famous soft coral site is “Somosomo Strait, Taveuni.” Also, if you want some excitement while diving, you may go to the “Shark Reef Marine Reserve” where you can enjoy the beauty of coral and meet sharks at the same time.
