13 Brazil Packing Essentials

Covering over 8.5 million square miles, Brazil is the largest country in South America, and, as such, its climate varies considerably from north to south. While over 60% of the country lies in the tropics, Brazil also lays claim to four other climactic regions, including semiarid, subtropical, highland tropical, and equatorial. With all of its different climates, not to mention its geographic diversity (mountains and cliffs to low-lying beaches), how on earth you supposed to pack for a trip to Brazil?

Fortunately, no matter where you are traveling in Brazil, there are some standard packing essentials that you simply must take with you! Continue reading for all of your Brazil packing needs!

Beach Essentials:

1. Swimwear

While this one might have you thinking “duh!” it’s important to note that, from beaches to lakes and rivers, a comfortable bathing suit is something you will definitely want to have with you! And while Brazilians are famous for those teeny bikinis, don’t feel the pressure to wear one if it makes you uncomfortable (or, if not, then go for it!)! One of the great things about Brazil is its ability to embrace the beauty of any and all body types. So, grab a swimsuit that will make you feel confident and comfortable on your vacation (or go shopping for a new one!) and soak up the rays while enjoying those Brazil beaches.

2. Sunscreen and Sunglasses

Needless to say, Brazil’s temperature climbs high in the summertime. These intense rays can wreak havoc on your skin and eyes, so make sure that you bring several bottles of sunscreen (SPF 30 or above) to last you the entire trip, as well as sunglasses that are polarized to protect your eyes. And be sure to continue to reapply that sun cream—a painful sunburn can ruin a beach vacation really quickly!

3. Sandals

As with any beach trip, be sure to bring with you a sturdy and comfortable pair of flip flops or sandals. These casual shoes are not only great for the beach, but they can also go with all of those cute outfits you have ready for your vacay!

4. A Sarong

Skip the bulky beach towel and grab a sarong instead: Brazilians use these colorful, lightweight skirts and dresses to sit on at the beach and dry off from the water. And, when you’re ready to go grab a snack, all you have to do is wrap it around your waist and you’re ready to go!

Jungle Essentials:

5. Waterproof Jacket

No matter where you’re hiking, rain is always a possibility in tropical Brazil (as is spray from the famously giant and powerful waterfalls!). So, if hiking is on your itinerary, make sure to put a waterproof jacket or poncho at the very top of your packing list!

6. Insect Repellent:

The hot, humid weather creates an ideal breeding ground for mosquitos and other insects. Make sure to pack strong insect repellent with a high percentage of DEET to ward off itchy bites and mosquito-borne illnesses!

7. Walking Boots:

If you plan on visiting a national park or hiking along forested trails, sensible shoes with adequate ankle support are a MUST! So, pack sturdy, comfortable walking and/or hiking shoes (preferably waterproof) to ensure a comfortable hiking experience! (And make sure to break them in beforehand to avoid those pesky and painful blisters!).

Everywhere Essentials

8. A Secure Bag

In bustling cities with crowded streets, it’s important to have a securely fastened purse or bag with you to ward off pick pockets. Keep your bag zipped up and close to you at all times to ensure the security of all of your belongings!

9. Plug Adapter

Plugs vary throughout Brazil; from the north to the south, you can’t always be sure what type of plug to expect. So your best bet will be to purchase a multi-country adapter that you can use throughout the country.

10. Casual clothing

Brazil’s dress code is famous for being colorful, casual, and fun. During the day (especially in the hot, humid summer months), you’ll want several, loose-fitting clothing options, such as flow pants, light dresses, and several pairs of shorts and tank tops. If you’re traveling in the cooler months, make sure to bring long pants and a light jacket for cool nights and chilly hotels or restaurants.

11. Water bottle

As previously stated, Brazil gets very hot, making it easy to get dehydrated. To avoid this unpleasantness, take a reusable water bottle that you can continue to refill.

12. A lightweight daypack

Leave the essentials at your hotel, and just pack what’s necessary in a small, lightweight backpack. That way, you do not have to worry about your valuables being stolen or having to carry all of your luggage!

13. A decent camera

No matter where your itinerary takes you in Brazil, you will want to capture special views and moments with an adequate camera!
