The Best Time to Travel to Vietnam

Although the tragic history of war has marred many individuals’ perceptions of the alluring country of Vietnam, travelers should not overlook the unique beauty that this Southeast Asian country contains. From the bustling cities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh (previously Saigon), to the fertile rice bowls of the Mekong and Red River deltas, Vietnam is shrouded in rich cultural traditions.

With its delicious culinary specialties, luscious green landscapes, and amazing cultural experiences, this country will certainly dazzle visitors at any time of the year. Yet, because of its elongated shape that stretches from north to south, Vietnam experiences a huge variety of regional and seasonal differences. The country’s narrow, snaking borders, which extend over 600 miles from the Red River in the north and the South China Sea at its south end, split Vietnam into three separate climates: 1) a humid subtropical climate to the north; 2) a monsoon climate in areas closest to the South China Sea; and 2) a tropical savanna climate to the south. So, while Northern Vietnam experiences distinct winter and summer seasons, Southern Vietnam divides its year by its rainy and dry seasons.

So, the best time to travel to Vietnam depends largely on your destination! Continue reading below to find out the optimal time to visit each region of Vietnam!

Mountainous Regions in Northwest Vietnam

Best Time to Go: March-May; October-November

Located in the mountains on the border of Vietnam and China, the town of Sapa and the surrounding areas experience dramatic summer and winter weather. From the months of October to late March, this mountainous region can experience freezing temperatures and low rainfall; December and January can be especially frosty, most notably at night and in the early mornings. Yet, temperatures typically begin to rise in late March, and from early April to early October, the region experiences heavy rains (especially during July and August) and temperatures up to 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Therefore, the best time to visit this northernmost region is during the cooler, drier shoulder seasons: 1) between winter and summer in March through early May, and 2) before the region gets too cold in October and November.

North Vietnam (Hanoi, Halong Bay)

Best Time to Go: February-April; October-November

Unlike many other parts of Vietnam, the busy city of Hanoi and the surrounding region experience all four seasons: summer, fall, winter, and spring. Similar to the mountainous areas of the northwest, the summer months (May-September) bring hot, humid weather and lots of heavy rain, while winter months (December-February) bring chilling temperatures and lots of fog. Though heavy rains and intense heat typically begin in May, the months of March, April, and (early) May can bring incredibly pleasant spring weather, with warm sunshine and not as many crowds. Yet, autumn is still considered to be the most optimal (and most romantic) time of the year to visit North Vietnam: from October to late November, the air cools, rains slow, and crowds thin, making the climate and environment ideal for travelers.

Tip: If you’re interested in participating in the Vietnamese New Year festivities, travel to North Vietnam in early February to experience the grand celebrations (just be sure to bring a warm rain jacket!)!

Central Vietnam (Hoi An, Danang, Da Lat)

Best Time to Go: February-May

Because this region enjoys warm temperatures all year round, Central Vietnam splits its year into two different seasons: rainy season and dry season. This area of the country, which includes popular coastal destinations such as Hoi An and Danang, experiences hot and dry weather from late January to August, with temperatures reaching uncomfortable heights of 90 degrees Fahrenheit and above (notably in the months of July and August). Therefore, most visitors agree that February to April or early May are generally the best months to travel to Central Vietnam, as they bring warm, comfortable temperatures and little rainfall.

After the hot month of August passes, the amount of rainfall begins to increase, which marks the beginning of Central Vietnam’s monsoon season. This season, which typically ranges from September to January, brings heavy rains that often form typhoons and widespread flooding. The rainfall reaches its peak in October and November, and, because of the potential dangers involved with such storms, tourists are discouraged from visiting Central Vietnam during these months.

South Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta)

Best Time to Go: Anytime!

Located much closer to the equator, Ho Chi Minh city and South Vietnam experience an average year-round temperature of 82 degrees Fahrenheit. Like Central Vietnam, this region is also split into two seasons: wet and dry. The dry season begins in November and typically lasts until early May, with the months of February to May seeing slightly hotter temperatures than November through January. The wet season then begins toward the end of May and lasts until early November, with the most rainfall occurring during the months of June, July, and August.

Unlike the lowlands in Central Vietnam, the wet season does not typically affect travel in South Vietnam, as the rains are generally reserved for the afternoons. While the dry months of December through April may be optimal times to visit, the wet season brings with it the unparalleled beauty of luscious green Vietnam landscapes!

Cross-Country

Best Time to Go: Spring (February-April) or Autumn (September-November)

If you are planning a long trip to Vietnam and want to visit places that are scattered throughout all of the regions of the country, then the best time to go would be during the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn. There truly is no bad time to visit Vietnam (except for certain areas in Central Vietnam during monsoon season!). All months typically bring both sunshine and rain in varying quantities, but in order to avoid peak summer heat and peak winter chills (or rains), try to plan your trips around these shoulder seasons!
