Tips for Visiting the Pyramids of Egypt
Planning to visit Egypt? It’s likely visiting the Great Pyramids is on your list of things to do. The Great Pyramid of Giza is the oldest and largest of the three pyramids and one of the top things to do in Egypt! It is also the last of the Wonders of the Ancient World. The three Great Pyramids are Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure and these pyramid-shaped masonry structures are located in Egypt. Most were built as tombs for the country's pharaohs during the Old and Middle Kingdom periods! Here are a few helpful tips for planning your visit!
1. Go in the winter
Visiting the Pyramids during cooler months will make your experience more enjoyable! Egyptian winters, last from November to April. During these months, the weather is slightly windy and temperatures average 70 °F. December typically sees an increase in tourism due to Christmas and New Year’s. The summer can be brutal with temperatures reaching 104 °F or more. If you visit during the summer pack extra sunscreen and water!
2. Visit on a Friday
This is the weekly day of rest and gathering for Muslims in Egypt. Traveling to and around the Pyramids is quieter. Planning beforehand is also a good rule to follow. If you are not with a tour group, it is best to go after the morning tour buses leave. If you want to avoid the rush, it is best to visit between 9:30 am – 10:30 am. Unfortunately, Cairo’s smog and polluted skies can limit visibility, so waiting until after the morning rush allows the pollution to dissipate.
3. Appropriate Clothing
Let's talk about shoes first! The area surrounding the Pyramids is sandy and rocky. If you plan on riding a camel or horse, be aware the shoes lacking a heel strap can slip off. It is recommended that you wear closed-toe shoes but is not required. I personally live in my Chacos and am comfortable in them. Ensure you wear comfortable and practical shoes! Next is clothing. In the summer lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen are recommended. A pair of jeans, a long-sleeve top and a coat are good choices if you visit in the winter.
4. Be Aware of Scammers
Exercise caution when someone offers a ‘free’ photo or tour. It can be helpful to avoid eye contact and do not smile. This may seem rude to some but simply say ‘no thanks; and keep walking. It is appropriate to bargain with camel guides to make sure you are getting a fair deal. If you wish, ensure your drive or tour guide is qualified and reputable.
Visiting Egypt’s pyramids is a must, as their magnificence is unlike anything else. Using these tips will help make the most of your experience and allow you to appreciate the wonder of these ancient structures. Have you visited the Great Pyramid of Giza? Share your experience or travel tips below!
