What Should You Pack When Moving Abroad?
It’s hard enough to pack for a few weeks away — but no one tells you how to prepare for a move overseas! Indeed, only a small portion of Americans will ever experience life abroad. Around 8.7 million people live outside U.S. territory, excluding active military service members.
So, if you’re preparing to leap across the pond, move Down Under, head south, or trek westward, you may feel like you’re doing it on your own. That’s why we’re here to help you figure out what you’ll need when you move overseas.
The good news? You’ll be able to pick up most of what you need when you arrive. But what should you have on you when you land to make life easier until you’re settled? Here’s what you should stock up on now.
Travel Adapters and Cords
No modern-day overseas trip would be complete without a few electronic devices close at hand. But you don’t want to be left with an unchargeable phone, computer, or tablet as you hop from country to country.
That’s why your first order of business should be to invest in some travel adapters so you can use all your devices on your journey and as soon as you land. Not only will you stay entertained throughout the trip, but you’ll also be able to check in with loved ones as you travel, too.
On that note, make sure you have the proper cables so you can charge your electronics no matter where you are. Some planes have built-in USB chargers at every seat — you just need to provide the proper cord to give your tablet, phone, or computer the juice.
Your Favorite Clothes Only
Next up, your wardrobe. How will you get all of it from one country to another? The truth is, you’ll have to downsize your clothing collection by a lot, in most cases. It will be cheaper and make your life easier to travel with less.
So, before you set off, take a very critical look at your closet. Get rid of what you don’t wear anymore and items that no longer fit. Pack only what you love and don often — otherwise, it’s just unnecessary bulk in your suitcase.
All Your Legal Documents
You can’t just show up in a foreign country, cross the border, and move in. You probably have a full file of legal documents that prove who you are, why you’re traveling, and that you do, indeed, have the right to do so.
Make sure you bring several copies of all of these papers with you. Keep them secure and close to you in your carry-on bag. That way, as you go through customs, you’ll be able to present whatever they need with ease.
On that note, make sure you have the rest of your family’s most vital documents close to you, too. We’re talking birth certificates, wills, Social Security cards, and more. These important papers shouldn’t be among the items that movers will pack. Instead, carry them with you to ensure they’re secure throughout the journey.
Medicines, Supplements, and Pet Care Items
Don’t forget that the journey ahead will be a long one. In some cases, it can take days to travel from the U.S. to an international destination. So, if you’re moving to a very far-flung locale, you’ll want to wisely pack your carry-on to ensure you stay comfortable throughout the journey.
That’s why it’s so important to pack all of the medications and supplements you take in your carry-on bag. It might be worthwhile to ask your doctor for a prescription refill so you don’t have to worry about getting new medication as soon as you land in your new home.
Don’t forget about any four-legged friends traveling with you, too. Be sure you’ve read the international pet policies for your intended destination — many countries require vaccine records or pet passports that you’ll have to obtain well before flying, and you might need to register them with customs. Think of your pets’ comfort, as well! Do they need any medications or special food while you travel or once you land? If so, make sure it’s easy to find in the luggage you bring with you.
Sentimental Must-Haves
You’re moving abroad, which means you’ll miss the comforts of home — yes, even if you’re thrilled about your new adventure. So, consider which sentimental items you have to have with you and find room for them in your suitcase, too.
Everyone’s definition of a sentimental must-have will be different, of course. You might bring your favorite piece of your grandmother’s jewelry, while the next international traveler will have to pack the baby blanket they’ve had for decades. It’s worth a spot in your suitcase because it will make you feel close to home, even if you’re thousands of miles away.
Travel With Everything You Need
This list is quite general because, in the end, you’re the only one who can decide what you need with you for your new life abroad. However, the must-haves are all here. From clothes to chargers to medication, if you pack all of the above, you’ll be healthy and happy in your new home.
