Blarney Castle, County Cork - Blarney Castle is a medieval fortress situated on the River Martin. It was built over 600 years ago by the McCarthy family. The most famous part of the entire castle would have to be Blarney Stone. This limestone slab built into the outer walls is said to give the gift of the gab to anyone willing to lean over the sharp drop off to kiss it! This is a bucket list stop for every castle lover!
Ashford Castle, County Mayo - This list couldn’t be complete without adding in this modern-day luxury. Once a medieval Victorian castle, Ashford takes your breath away from the moment you see it. Originally a spot for fierce battles after it was built in the 1200s, it was converted to a hunting lodge, before being purchased by the famous Guinness family in 1852. Dunluce Castle, County Antrim - Overlooking the cliffs on the edge of a basalt outcropping in Northern Ireland, Dunluce Castle is a must-see. Built in the 13th-century, this medieval castle was reduced to ruins during the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. The castle is accessible by a bridge connected to the mainland. The Rock of Cashel, County Tipperary - Perched on a hill, surrounded by the green countryside of Tipperary, the Rock of Cashel is easily one of the most famous castles in all of Ireland. It has been said that it is the exact spot where St. Patrick converted Aenghus, King of Munster, to Christianity in the 5th-century. The site is easily accessible, and the views are incredible!
Kilkenny Castle, County Kilkenny - Built in 1195 to watch over the River Nore, a junction of multiple river routes, Kilkenny Castle is an impressive fortress. The Irish name for this castle is Caisleán Chill Chainnigh. It is surrounded by 50 acres of stunning parkland, a terraced rose garden, and a man-made lake! Slane Castle, County Meath - Slane Castle is perfectly situated within a 1,500 acre estate in the Boyne Valley of County Meath. Just 25 minutes from the Dublin airport, this is a perfect day-trip out of the city. The castle has belonged to the Conyngham family since 1703, and has seen many balls, royal visits, weddings, and so much more throughout its history!
Carrickfergus Castle, Country Antrim - Carrickfergus is a Norman Castle in Northern Ireland, and is recognized as one of the most well-preserved medieval structures in the country since it was built by John de Courcy in 1177. Through the years, it has been besieged by the Scots, Irish, English, and French. Despite all of this, it remains a stunning historical building that you HAVE to see for yourself.
Malahide Castle, County Dublin - Just a 30 minute train ride from the capital city of Dublin, lies a stunning castle surrounded by the large Malahide Demesne Regional Park, complete with a botanical garden! Malahide Castle is a true escape from the city. Since the castle was completed in the 12th-century, greenery has grown up and over the castle walls, adding to the overall fairytale-esque vibe of the whole area. Considering how close it is to the big city, it’s well worth taking a day to visit Malahide Castle!
Ross Castle, County Kerry - This 15th-century tower castle sits within Killarney National Park. It was originally the ancestral home for the Clan O’Donoghue, but through the years shifted to being associated with the Brownes of Killarney. Not only should you visit this castle, you should also take the time to explore the surrounding national park! It was the first national park in Ireland, after Muckross Estate was donated back to Irish Free State in 1932. The park is full of woodlands, walking trails, and even a few waterfalls!
