The clear blue water of the Adriatic Sea washes up on the stunning shoreline of Croatia to make for some of the most pristine beaches on the planet. The long coast of Croatia is known for its diverse ocean fronts featuring everything from caves to cliffs to towns full of culture. Don’t forget about the dozens of islands that are world-class vacation hot spots. With so many beaches to choose from, we have narrowed it down to our favorites. Here are the best beaches in Croatia:
Nugal Beach
In the town of Makarska, the dream-worthy Nugal Beach is white sand heaven accessible only by a footpath or boat. This nude beach has it all, from a pine forest around the beach area to scenic seaside cliffs towering over the water. The natural beauty is abundant as there is even a waterfall that makes its way down the rocks. Beyond the stunning nature, the beach attracts naturists and is a great place to get a taste of the unique Croatian culture. The nearby town of Makarska is full of vibrant music, sports, and works of art that are specific to the Mediterranean. Embrace the culture and visit the picturesque Nugal Beach, which will rock your Instagram and your bucket list.
Stiniva Beach
Tucked away in a rocky nook on the island of Vis, Stiniva Beach is a photographer’s delight. Accessible by boat or by steep steps, the beach is becoming more well-known and has been awarded multiple times as one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe. The beach lies in between dramatic white cliffs that protect the beach and create calm water. While the water is clear in all parts of Croatia, the water in the protected cove is especially see-through. Catch a ferry from Split (about 2.5 hours in duration) and spend the day at Stiniva Beach. We promise it is well worth the journey!
Betina Cave
Just south of Dubrovnik, take a journey to Betina Cave. This romantic location is a perfect getaway for those seeking serenity. While available only by water, visitors often rent kayaks or use a water taxi to arrive at the cave. Pack a lunch and enjoy the afternoon as you will likely enjoy a secluded and private scene. This cave provides a sandy shelter from the sun and a gorgeous beach area to take a dip in the blue water. Betina Cave is a tourist must-see and a unique natural landmark.
Zlatni Rat
Closest to the town of Bol on the island of Brač, Zlatni Rat is an essential stop to any Croatian vacation. Also known as the “Golden Horn”, the mini-peninsula launches a white sandy coastline out into the middle of the vibrant Adriatic Sea. The strip of sand is a piece of paradise with inviting water all around. Watch the sunset before celebrating the exciting nightlife of Croatia. A glimpse of a picture of this place will make you jealous of anyone who has ever been, wanting you to plan your own Croatian adventure.
Baska Beach
Located on Krk, the largest island in Croatia, Baska Beach is a fantastic spot for those seeking a beach that has it all. Water sports, boats, restaurants, cafes, and scooter rentals are just of the few amenities available. The pebble-filled shore and the mountainous background paint a different kind of beach experience that only Croatia can offer. With so many beaches and islands to choose from, choosing Baska will certainly please the adventure seeker as well as the calm traveler seeking relaxation. Take time to wander the narrow streets in the old city, rich in history and culture.
Watermelon Beach (St. Johns Beach)
Also known as Sveti Ivan Beach, Watermelon Beach is a stunner on the island of Cres. Watermelon is another beach that we cannot leave out from our best beaches list, the long sandy stretch is a fantastic place to take a swim and soak up the beauty around you. The beach is quite inaccessible and not too crowded, even on holidays. Take advantage of the shade as the beach is lined with Mediterranean foliage. There are no amenities, which makes for a peaceful environment to simply relax. The beach is near the town of Lubenice, a historic city over 4,000 years old which was once inhabited by Romans.
Banje Beach
Our final beach highlight takes us to the famous Banje Beach in Dubrovnik. The beach sits near the Old Town of Dubrovnik. Lovely sights of the town and the beach build a nice blend of sea and city. Have fun with water sports before feasting on the delicious food at one of the many restaurants available. Banje Beach is a classic Mediterranean beach that should definitely be a stop on your visit to Dubrovnik.
Bonus: Sveti Jakov Beach
We had to add one more beach into the mix. Sveti Jakov Beach is nearby Banje Beach in Dubrovnik. The difference is the improved seclusion, snorkeling, and sunsets at Sveti Jakov. The rock walls around the water are impressive and the foliage beautiful. Keep an eye out for Game of Thrones filming locations in the area.
