If you haven’t heard, Jordan is one of the most popular travel destinations in the Middle East. Between its magnificent ancient ruins, pristine beaches and incredible natural wonders, if Jordan isn’t already on your travel list, it should be. With so much to offer to all of its different types of travelers, Jordan will keep every visitor entertained year-round. Depending on your travel interests and budget, it is important to understand Jordan’s 4 main travel seasons. We have completed all of the necessary research and have laid out the pros and cons of each season that will help you decide the best time for you to travel to Jordan:
March-May: Spring (High Season)
If looking for perfect weather conditions, anytime between March and May would be your best time to visit Jordan. Average temperatures range from 45-81° F. The months of winter rains turn the country into a flourishing mix of colors between the vibrant valley wildflowers and the lush green forests. The rumor that nothing grows in a desert is a huge misconception! Expect to witness Jordan’s magical variety of over 2,000 trees and plants. Make sure to book your accommodation and travel well in advance as this is the country’s peak tourist season.
If you are planning a hiking vacation, this is your season to travel to Jordan. Jerash, Petra and the Desert Castles are best visited during this season as you’ll be able to enjoy them without suffering through the intense summer heat. Take note that airfares to Jordan also tend to increase surrounding major Islamic holidays and events such as Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha and the month of Ramadan which changes dates depending on the year. Once you make it into Jordan, if visiting during the month of Ramadan, you will surprisingly see the streets less hectic and restaurants less busy during daytime hours, as this is when people fast for the holy month. While this quickly changes at sundown, the cities become alive with breakings of the daily fasts and celebrations with family and friends. Eid al-Fitr is a special time to visit as it is a festival of generosity filled with colorful clothing and lights. Everyone should experience it at least once.
June-August: Summer (Low Season)
Summer in Jordan brings the heat. Temperatures can easily soar over 100 degrees! If choosing to visit during this time, stock up on sunscreen when packing and make sure you are remaining hydrated when exploring the country. Avoid sightseeing during the peak hours between noon and 3 pm. Do all of your explorings during the mornings and evenings when the humidity and the temperatures are much cooler and tolerable. Beware of the dreaded khaseem wind that blows so strong it kicks up the desert sands, creating haboobs or dust storms. When it is bad it can turn the sky into a dark cloud and raise the surrounding temperatures another 15 degrees from the already sweltering heat.
If you are traveling to Jordan on a budget, this is a great time to visit. Since the desert heat can easily become unbearable to some, hotels typically lower their prices around this time of the year. If visiting in August, head to the desert one night where you can view the yearly occurrence of the eventful Perseid meteor shower. July is also a great time to visit to experience the annual Jerash Festival. This is when the entire city congregates in celebration of the Jordanian culture, arts, literature, and food.
September- November: Fall (High Season)
As the summer heat finally begins to tone down, you’ll experience more pleasant weather if visiting during Jordan’s Fall. Although warm days are ahead, nights can get pretty chilly so pack some warm clothes for your nights. Average temperatures range between 48-86° F You’ll get to experience the very beginning of the rainy season with the occasional shower. While a short season, it sure is a beautiful one. This is another season when you will need to book your accommodation in advance. Small cities and towns across the country often fill up fast.
This is one of the best times to visit the Dead Sea. Expect lukewarm waters that feel amazing to take a dip in. Scuba divers should head to the Gulf of Aqaba. Experience the amazing marine life and stunning coral reefs in the warm waters. If you are into camping, this is the perfect opportunity to spend a few nights in the desert. The combination of mild temperatures and low rains make for the perfect atmosphere.
December-February: Winter (Low Season)
During winter months, temperatures in Jordan can drop to below freezing. Expect to face icy winds and see snow across Petra’s ancient buildings. Even the desert gets very cold during this season with a lot of wind and rain. Due to the unpredictable weather during this time, it is recommended to not camp out. Make sure to pack your warmest waterproof jackets and shoes. Jordan receives 70% of its yearly rainfall all within the month of January. If looking to do some budget travel and avoid the crowds, this is the best time to visit Jordan.
If visiting during this time and looking to escape the cold, the Dead Sea should be at the top of your itinerary. Due to the sea’s low altitude location, it is much warmer than the rest of the country and you will still be able to get your tan on. If in Jordan during the month of February, celebrate the local Bedouin art and culture with the Aqaba Traditional Arts Festival.
