Students hoping to study abroad this year are finally seeing a glimmer of hope. More than 50 countries are now fully open to U.S. travelers and over 200 more are currently open to those who either receive a negative COVID-19 test or are willing to quarantine. As air travel ramps up, you’ll likely be looking at more travel opportunities. But that doesn’t mean they’re safe.
In fact, the U.S. Department of State has put a “Do Not Travel” advisory on roughly 100 countries, including France, Greece, and Brazil. Whether it be war, high contagion levels, or natural disasters, traveling to these destinations can prove dangerous to student travelers.
So which countries are the safest to travel to? Below, you’ll find the top seven — and reasons why you should pull the trigger and just go.
1. Canada
If your parents are hesitant to let you travel anywhere, why not hop on up to Canada? Known for its friendly and welcoming locals, Canada is one of the best countries for student travel.
It’s also a clear choice for those majoring in computer and information technologies, as many Canadian universities are known for their technological innovations and higher-quality teaching. So, if you’re looking for a European vibe for a fraction of the price, this country is the place to be.
2. Ireland
Ireland is an incredibly safe and peaceful country dotted with castles, monasteries, and lochs. The rolling green hills give way to small cities and towns, the largest of which is Dublin.
Here, you’ll find Trinity College, Ireland’s oldest surviving university. Ranked as the top school on the island, Trinity is recognized as a top international center for research and a world leader in math, technology, English, and more. Choose from more than 400 undergraduate courses and research options in a variety of fields.
3. The Netherlands
Thanks to low crime rates, the Netherlands has consistently ranked as one of the safest, most student-friendly places for women, solo and young travelers. It also has low rates of gender and racial discrimination, making it a safe and welcoming destination for LGBTQ+ individuals and people of color.
Find universities famous for their programs in art, psychology, business management, and engineering, from Amsterdam to Rotterdam. Just remember to pick one that offers classes in English, or you’ll have to take a crash course in Dutch!
4. Iceland
Studying abroad might be one of the safest ways to travel in the upcoming year, especially if you’re going to Iceland. This country has held the title of the most peaceful country in the world since 2008 and is incredibly popular among tourists. Low crime rates, few incarcerations, and minimal terrorist events make this island especially safe for travelers.
If you plan to study at one of the many Icelandic universities, pick a program partnered with your college to ensure all your credits transfer at the end of the semester.
5. Sweden
Sweden is a top-rated destination in terms of safety, making it one of the best countries to travel to in 2021. Low crime rates, few traffic deaths, and a blossoming LGBTQ+ community make it an ideal place for students studying abroad.
The country also welcomes roughly 4,500 new foreign exchange students per year, which means you’re likely to meet people from all over the world. Choose from more than 1,000 English-taught programs in subjects like engineering, life sciences, and business, and explore Stockholm or Gothenburg in your free time.
6. New Zealand
If you’re looking for a destination that’s taken strict precautions against COVID-19, look no further than New Zealand. The country kept its borders closed to most foreign travelers throughout the pandemic to effectively mitigate the spread.
As of this publication, the islands are accepting international travelers, so it may be a great option if case numbers remain low. If you do end up studying there, you’ll also benefit from New Zealand’s Education Code of Practice, which requires educators to look after your safety and well-being during your stay.
7. Japan
After World War II, Japan renounced its right to declare war. Since then, the country has been a peaceful and very popular place to study. Low homicide rates and a ubiquitous police presence also make Japan one of the best countries to travel in 2022.
Choose from dozens of top universities and a wide variety of majors. The most popular are science, engineering, technology, and mathematics. However, a degree in medical science is another common choice among international students.
Safety First
Choosing the right destination for your study abroad program is key to having a fun, successful school year. As long as you pick a safe one, you’ll have enough peace of mind — and confidence — to meet new friends, go on adventures, and make tons of unforgettable memories.
