If you are looking for a nice warm place to soak up some sun, Costa Rica is the place for you. Costa Rica is just a few degrees north of the equator, so it doesn't experience all four seasons as most places do. Because of this, Costa Rica weather is warm and enjoyable for the most part almost all year long. Here we are going to take a more in-depth look at what the year-round weather consists so you will be able to know what to expect when it comes to the weather in this tropical paradise of South America.
Although the entire country is relatively similar in weather, with the national average being 76 degrees Fahrenheit for the year, there are places here where it changes up a little bit so you might need to prepare for that difference. One of the reasons for this is because Costa Rica has mountains. So in general, the higher up on the mountains that you get, the cooler the weather will be. In most of the lowland areas, the weather is hot year-round. The hottest days will be in the mid-80s while the coldest days will only dip into the high 60s, so you won't have to worry about packing a big jacket if you are visiting these places. However, in the highlands of Costa Rica, the temperature occasionally drops to a crisp high 40s. Although it is pretty rare that this happens, you do not want to get caught unprepared. So if you plan on taking an adventure into the mountains, make sure you are ready for whatever may come your way!
Like we mentioned before, Costa Rica does not have all four seasons. Instead, it has only two. Because it is so close to the equator, the “summer” months are actually from December to April, while the “winter” months are from May to November. The better names for these seasons are the rainy and dry seasons.
Dry Season
During the summer, or dry season, rainfall is not super common. Although there is always a slight chance that a mild storm might come in, for the most part, it will be sunny and you will not have to worry about the showers getting in the way of your Costa Rican holiday.
Rainy Season
What about during the rainy season? Just because it is labeled as the rainy season, it does not rain all day every day. Typically, it will be sunny and clear during the morning hours of the day then the clouds will begin to build up and there will be showers coming down by mid to late afternoon. These months of the year are still great times to visit, just be prepared to either get wet or have a nice enjoyable afternoon watching the rainfall.
One thing you will for sure deal with here in Costa Rica is the humidity. like the temperature, there are slight differences to it in each part of the country, but for the most part, it is consistently high. The average humidity for the entire country for the entire year is about 80%. In the rainforests is where it will be the highest, and in the dry forests of the highlands is where it will be the lowest. So bring a water bottle and make sure you stay hydrated!
Costa Rica’s weather is fantastic. The warm air is perfect for both relaxing and for adventuring. So what are you waiting for? Get down there and experience it for yourself!
