Why Bhutan is a Nature Lover's Dream

Located in the high Himalayas, Bhutan is a landlocked, Buddhist kingdom that is well-known for its dramatic, mountainous landscapes, beautiful monasteries, and rich cultural traditions.

The natural beauty and wildlife of Bhutan are incredibly important to the Bhutanese people, and the government, along with the local population, works hard to protect it. With four large national parks and several wildlife reserves, Bhutan is a nature-lover’s dream destination. Continue reading to learn why!

History of Tourism in Bhutan

The Kingdom of Bhutan remained isolated from most of the world until the late 1960s and early 1970s, when the country opened its doors to tourism in an effort to gain revenue and to share with the world Bhutanese culture and values. However, although it is open to foreign tourists, the Bhutanese government is keenly aware of the potential negative environmental impact that mass tourism can have. It has, therefore, worked hard to keep mass tourism at bay by requiring travelers to book tours through Bhutanese companies, and by requiring a $250 fee per person per day. The fee includes meals, lodging, and a sustainable tourism charge of $65 to ensure that travelers have a “low impact” on the environment and natural resources.

Because of its strict tourism policies, Bhutan has been able to maintain one of the most intact ecosystems in the world. Over 35% of Bhutan’s land is protected or preserved, and the government has promised to maintain a minimum of 60% forest coverage. Over and over again, the country continues to vote against the sacrifice of natural resources in favor of short term economic gains. Its environmental protection and dedication to sustainable tourism makes this country a dream destination for nature lovers!
