Brazil is the largest country in South America. It is densely populated in some areas, but also has immense biodiversity and is home to approximately 2/3 of the Amazon Rainforest. It is an adventure and cultural traveller’s dream. But with so much to see and do, how do you narrow down where you should go? This is the ultimate travel guide for helping you decide the must-see destinations while on an expedition through Brazil!
Rio de Janeiro - When you picture Brazil in your head, chances are you’re seeing Rio de Janeiro. And for good reason too! With some of Brazil’s most notable landmarks, like the Christ the Redeemer statue; Sugarloaf Mountain; and Copacabana Beach, Rio is packed with amazing locations. This city is full of excitement year-round, but for some added fun, visit in February during Carnival!
Iguazu Falls - With 275 individual waterfalls making up its contents, Iguazu Falls can surely rival Niagara. The falls sits along the borders of Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay. The Devil’s Throat is the largest of the falls and is absolutely breathtaking. While here, take in the stunning scenery around that’s teeming with wildlife.
Salvador - This is where old city charm meets culture! Salvador is the historic center of the Bahia state and is one of the oldest colonial cities in the Americas. This is where the Afro-Brazilian martial arts style of capoeira was born (click here for a cool video!). The food here is heavily influenced by African and Caribbean cuisine. You HAVE to try Salvador’s signature dish, moqueca, which is a seafood stew with a coconut milk base.
Fortaleza - For those who want a beach vacation, look no further than Fortaleza! This city is the gateway to the Ceará Coast. Beaches in Fortaleza are great for swimming, sunbathing, and surfing. There’s also amazing restaurants and hotels right along the beaches! Make sure to stop at Praia do Futuro, Iracema, and Mucuripe; these are some of the best beaches you’ll find while relaxing in Fortaleza.
The Amazon - What has emerald trees; stunning flora and fauna; and a massive river running through? None other than the Amazon Rainforest! Brazil is home to 60% of the Amazon, and is an adventure traveller’s paradise! You can go kayaking, hiking, or try your hand at piranha fishing! There’s also plenty of opportunities for wildlife viewing (at a safe distance of course). You could see pink river dolphins, black caiman, anacondas, brown-throated sloths, or the white-cheeked spider monkey! São Paulo - You can’t go on a trip to Brazil without making a stop in its capital city! São Paulo alone has a population of over 12 million people, and is one of the most vibrant city centers in the world! Take a stroll down Paulista Avenue, and visit some of the many shops, restaurants, galleries, and museums. This is a foodies dream city, with a diverse culinary scene. It’s also a city that never sleeps, much like Tokyo or New York. São Paulo is the perfect concrete jungle for those who like to party.
Parati - Parati (also spelled Paraty) may just be Brazil’s prettiest city. It is filled with cobble-stone streets and colonial charm! The center of the city is very pedestrian-friendly as there are virtually no cars! Many of the colorful homes have now been converted into bed and breakfasts for a culturally immersive experience. We highly suggest visiting the defense ports, which still have cannons!
Recife - You will definitely want to make a stop in the “Venice of Brazil”! Recife is filled with stunning waterways and bridges, which is how it got its nickname. Recife has become a popular tourist destination because of its historic old town, its surrounding tropical forest, and nearby islands. Originally a Dutch colony, many of the colorful colonial buildings are still standing. Recife’s beach, Porto de Galinhas, has also won the title of the best beach in Brazil!
