This morning, we will get acquainted with Montevideo’s architectural landmarks, neighborhoods, and coastal views on an insightful three-hour guided tour of the capital. We will drive to Independence Plaza (Plaza Independencia), which divides Montevideo’s Old Town and downtown. Our guide will point out the monument to José Artigas, Uruguay's great military leader and national hero, and will lead you on a walk around the plaza. Admire the Italian Gothic–style architecture of the Palacio Salvo (Palacio Legislativo), whose 26 stories once made it South America's tallest building. We'll view Puerta de la Ciudadela, one of the few remaining parts of the city wall that once surrounded colonial Montevideo. Back aboard the bus, we'll head to the barrio of El Prado, home to three soccer stadiums and Prado Park. Our tour continues to elegant Carrasco, Punta Gorda and Pocitos, traveling along La Rambla de Montevideo. Get out to stroll a section of this beachside promenade, where you can browse local shops and enjoy lovely coastal views from Punta Gorda before the return drive to your hotel.

You'll enjoy a delicious dinner at the hotel or at a local restaurant, then spend the rest of the evening exploring Montevideo at your leisure.

After breakfast, we will be picked up at the hotel and brought to a Uruguayan vineyard. We will discover the different challenges that every generation of Uruguayan wine-producers has faced, from cultivating the earliest vineyards at the beginning of the last century until the present. We will also learn about Uruguayan wine from grape to glass. We will enjoy the nature in the vineyards and learn about the way that local artisans make their wines, then sample five select wines, including an award-winning red wine made from Tannat grapes — one of the most prominent grape varieties used in Uruguayan wine. We will also learn about the winemaking process and take tips on appreciating different varietals.

Enjoy a traditional Uruguayan lunch of canelones or stuffed pasta, and eat dessert while at the vineyard. After lunch, we will head back to the hostel for an afternoon and evening that each person will spend at leisure.
